Abraham was the first to proclaim to the world that there is only one G‑d. He believed in a G‑d who is everywhere and yet beyond all things. He taught that G‑d desires justice and compassion in His world and holds people accountable for what they do. Abraham faced many challenges and risked his life to publicize his beliefs. His son, Isaac, followed in his path, as did Isaac’s son, Jacob, who G‑d named Israel. And so they were promised that their children would be given the Land of Canaan, which is today called the Land of Israel.

This requires sensitivity and restraint, which is true for wanting other people to change in any way. We believe we are doing it for their good, but when we try to control others, we let our disappointments be known when they do not measure up. Since people resist being controlled, this dynamic can lead to very counterproductive behaviors and poison the relationship. So be aware that controlling or manipulative behavior is a warning sign, and as this type of behavior can quickly escalate, it’s essential to address it early and to set healthy boundaries.

A parent can easily say "no" 200-300 times a day to a young child. After a barrage of "no's," a child can become so inured to the pain that he stops listening. Obviously, a parent must set limits, but it is also essential to show empathy as you do so. Teaching children to face life's endless disappointments, losses and frustrations with determination and discipline is what helps them build ego-strengths! Even if they rant and rave and accuse you of being the meanest parent on earth, they will – one day - appreciate the fact that you cared enough to protect them.

Shortly before, a similar accusation had been brought against the Jews of Schaffhausen and been successfully refuted. When news of Michael Vinelmann's fate was brought to Schaffhausen, several of the Jews of the city fled and were soon captured. They were taken back to Schaffhausen, where they were thrown into a dungeon and terribly tortured. Unable to endure the pain, they "confessed" to the crime of which they had been accused, whereupon all the Jews living in Schaffhausen were condemned to death. Thirty Jews were burned alive. Four weeks later, eighteen men and women died at the stake in W

These are the statutes and ordinances that you shall keep to perform in the land which the Lord God of your fathers gives you to possess all the days that you live on the earth. You shall utterly destroy from all the places where the nations, that you shall possess, worshipped their gods, upon the lofty mountains and upon the hills, and under every lush tree. And there you shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and the separation by your hand, and your vows and your donations, and the firstborn of your cattle and of your sheep.

Shabbat is the fourth of the 10 Commandments and repeated over and over again in the Torah, making it one of the most important elements of Judaism. In fact, Shabbat is so central to Jewish life that in common parlance the term shomer Shabbat (Shabbat observer) is synonymous with “religious Jew.” The most significant point in Jewish history was the Revelation at Sinai, when G‑d communicated the 10 Commandments and struck a covenant with the Jewish people after He took them out of Egypt. This magnificent moment, according to the sages of the Talmud, took place on Shabbat.

You did something wrong. Of that, you’re sure. Does that mean you must forever publicly beat your chest to be accepted in polite society? A closer look at the High Priest’s confession on Yom Kippur tells an empowering story about how we ought to look at our past—and our future. Suppose you accidentally left a twenty-dollar bill outside and only after the fact you realized that someone who really needed it found it and bought lunch. Do you deserve any credit? From an awkwardly placed verse in a discussion about sacrifices we learn that yes, such a donation may just be the most noble of all.
